Sea of Cortez Celestial Navigation and Offshore Passagemaking Course (ASA 107/108)

This course combines two very different experiences into a meaningful whole. ASA 107 covers celestial navigation, theory and practice. The skills the sailor builds during this course are put into practical use as one part of the much more broad ASA 108: Offshore Passagemaking.

Students undertaking this course will become familiar and proficient with all steps of planning for an offshore passage that should be undertaken by any prudent sailor. This includes substantial pre-departure homework.

The on-water component of your ASA 107/108 offshore passagemaking course will enable you to acquire and practice the skills needed by an offshore sailor, including the addition of celestial navigation, and the experience gained on the water will help provide the confidence you need to skipper your next offshore passage on your own vessel or an extended charter.

Course Components:

ASA 107, Celestial Navigation

Able to apply celestial navigation theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in offshore waters.

Prerequisites: Coastal Navigation (ASA 105), and the ability to demonstrate competencies in all knowledge and skills elements of that Standard.

ASA 108, Offshore Passagemaking

Able to skipper a sailing vessel on extended offshore passages requiring celestial navigation. Knowledge of long-term passage planning, offshore vessel selection, sail repair, offshore first aid, watch-keeping, emergency procedures, abandon ship protocols, safety and seamanship.

Prerequisites: ASA 101: Keelboat Sailing, ASA 103: Basic Coastal Cruising, ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising, ASA 105: Coastal Navigation, ASA 106: Advanced Coastal Cruising, and the ability to demonstrate competencies in all knowledge and skills elements of those Standards. Note: It is possible to fulfill the prerequisites with either ASA 107, Celestial Navigation or the ASA 117, Basic Celestial Endorsement.

Focused Attention

In order to provide the best experience and maximum personal instruction, WCM typically limits class sizes to 4 persons (except Coastal Navigation - ASA 105). The minimum number for a class to take place is 3 students. Your class WILL BE RESCHEDULED if the class has less than 3 students. There are no refunds. You may have the option of paying extra to keep the class at the scheduled time with less than 3 students. The best way to make sure your class goes off as scheduled, at the price listed here, is to HELP US FILL THE CLASS WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

Come Prepared

You are required to purchase and review the course materials prior to your arrival. This ensures the classes can move along swiftly, you get the best result, and spend more time on the water, sailing!

No Hassles

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required at time of booking, and tuition will be paid in full 30 days prior to beginning of class. This balance payment is also not refundable. WCM will charge your credit card the tuition balance 30 days prior to the first day of your scheduled class, or you can pay the balance online.

*Port and Marina Fees, and applicable taxes, are included in the listed price. If you book online, a 6% fee will be added by the third-party provider of this reservation service. This fee is not collected by WCM, and in most cases is non-refundable. Prices subject to change without notice.

Because Stuff Happens

Up to 60 days before the start of your scheduled course or class, you may request an alternate date. There are no refunds offered, however you may reschedule your class booking for a fee (20% of the full class amount), booking another date up to one year from your original class start date.

Please understand that your change/rescheduling affects all other enrolled students, some of whom may have already purchased airfare and taken time off work. Your changes also affect your instructor’s schedule, as well as boat scheduling. This could result in postponing the class or canceling it entirely. For these reasons there are no refunds or rescheduling within 60 days of class start date.

COVID-19 Policy:

If your charter or lessons are cancelled due to Covid-19 regulations or travel restrictions, we will waive the rescheduling fee and offer extra time to reschedule. We do not offer refunds, however, and recommend our guests purchase private travel insurance through their credit card company and/or third party.

Best Weather in the Country.... But

While San Diego enjoys some of the fairest and most consistently good weather in the USA, we will on rare occasions have to postpone a class due to inclement weather. This decision is made at the discretion of the sailing instructor and management of WCM Sailing School. If a decision to postpone a class is made, it is done so with the safety and comfort of of our clients in mind. If foul weather is forecast we urge you to contact us for an update.

Sample the Life

We provide free lodging on our boats for all classes that require overnight sailing, anchoring, mooring or docking as part of the class syllabus. These classes are Bareboat Multihull Charter (ASA 104/114), Catalina Complete Sailing (ASA 101, 103, 104, 114) and Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 105 & 106 or 114).
